El presente continuo

When you read the title of this class, you certainly thought: “Oh no! Not another tense!”. But don’t worry, this tense is not so complicated and you just need to memorize a few things to be good at it. Moreover, the class is in Spanish and in English so that you can understand absolutely everything.

Level of the class: for beginners

Goals of the class: Discovering el presente continuo (present continuous) / Practicing this tense with verbs which are often used in the everyday life.

Content of the class:

Que es el presente continuo? / What is “el presente continuo”?

  • Que està haciendo? / What is she doing?

Answer:

Jennifer Lopez está cantando. / Jennifer Lopez is singing.

 

Cuando utilizamos el presente continuo? / When do we use “el presente continuo”?

Utilizamos el presente continuo para describir lo que està pasando ahora. / We use “el presente continuo” to describe what is happening right now.

 

Como construir este tiempo? / How to build this tense?

El presente continuo tiene dos elementos. / “El presente continuo” has two elements.

estar (en el presente) + – ando cuando es un verbo que termina en -ar /  (estar (present) + -ando when it’s an -AR verb).

estar (en el presente) + -iendo cuando es un verbo que termina en -er o -ir   / (estar (present) + -iendo when it’s a an -IR or an -ER verb).

 

Como conjugar este tiempo? / How to conjugate this tense?

  • Ejemplo de conjugación con los verbos terminados en -AR / Example of conjugation with -AR verbs.

Cantar:(to sing)

(Yo) estoy cantando

(Tù) estás cantando

(El / Ella / Usted) está cantando

(Nosotros) estamos cantando

(Vosotros) estáis cantando

(Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes) están cantando

 

CANTAR se vuelve cantando / CANTAR becomes cantando

 

  • Ejemplo de conjugación con los verbos terminados en -IR / Example of conjugation with -IR verbs.

Vivir: (to live)

(Yo) estoy viviendo

(Tú) estás viviendo

(El / Ella / Usted) está viviendo

(Nosotros) estamos viviendo

(Vosotros) estáis viviendo

(Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes) están viviendo

 

VIVIR se vuelve viviendo / VIVIR becomes viviendo 

 

  • Con los verbos terminados en -ER, es la misma conjugación que con los verbos terminado en – IR / With -ER verbs, it is the same conjugation as with the -IR verbs:

Comer: (to eat)

(Yo) estoy comiendo

(Tú) estás comiendo

(El / Ella / Usted) está comiendo

(Nosotros) estamos comiendo

(Vosotros) estáis comiendo

(Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes) están comiendo

 

COMER se vuelve comiendo / COMER becomes comiendo.

 

Tienes suerte porque soló hay algunas excepciónes ! / You’re lucky because there are only limited exceptions!

  • Leer (to read) se vuelve (yo) estoy leyendo / Leer (to read) becomes (yo) estoy leyendo.
  • dormir (to sleep) se vuelve durmiendo / dormir (sleep) becomes durmiendo.
  • Oír (to hear) se vuelve oyendo / oír (to hear) becomes oyendo.
  • Decir (to say) se vuelve diciendo / decir (to say) becomes diciendo.

 

Que pasa con las frases negativas ? /What happens with negative sentences?

(Yo) no estoy cantando.

“no” está antes de la conjugación del presente continuo / “no” is located before the conjugation of “el presente continuo”.

 

Lo que debes memorizar / what you must memorize:

  • la conjugación de “estar” / the conjugation of “estar”
  • las terminaciónes para cada tipo de verbo (-AR / -IR / -ER) / the endings for each type of verbs.
  • las excepciónes / the exceptions
  • la manera de construir una frase negativa / how to make a negative sentence.
